90% Sunblock Shade Cloth with Grommets (3m x 3m)

A 3m x 3m panel of 90% sunblock shade cloth, heavy shading for greenhouses, pergolas or a larger patio area that gets full sun for most of the day.

Reinforced metal grommets run around the edge, so you can thread rope, bungee cord or cable ties through without the fabric tearing under tension.

At 90%, this is the heaviest shading in the range, suited to shade-loving plants, hot climates, or simply keeping a seating area usable at midday.

UV-resistant HDPE yarn resists the sun damage that weakens untreated netting within a single season.

The square 3m x 3m format works well as a stand-alone canopy as well as greenhouse or frame shading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 90% shading actually block?

90% shade cloth blocks around nine-tenths of direct sunlight, a heavy shading rate suited to hot climates, shade-loving plants, or simply keeping a patio comfortable at midday.

What are the grommets for?

The metal grommets around the edge let you thread rope, bungee cord, cable ties or hooks through the fabric without it tearing, making it much easier to tension and fix.

Is 90% too much shade for vegetables?

For most fruiting vegetables, yes, 90% is heavier than ideal; it suits shade-tolerant plants, seedlings needing protection, or non-plant uses like patio shading better than a full veg bed.

Can this be used as a patio shade sail?

Yes, the grommeted edges make it well suited to being tensioned like a shade sail over a patio or seating area.

How do I fix it using the grommets?

Thread rope, bungee cord or cable ties through each grommet and tension it out to fixed points, such as posts, a fence or a pergola frame, pulling it reasonably taut to avoid sagging and pooling water.

Will 3m x 3m cover a standard greenhouse?

It suits a full roof on a smaller greenhouse or one side of a larger one; measure your structure and compare to the 3m x 3m panel size before buying.

Does the black colour affect how hot it gets?

Black absorbs more heat into the fabric itself than a lighter colour would, but the shading effect underneath the cloth is still driven mainly by the 90% shade rate rather than colour.

How Much Shade Cloth Do I Need?

4 min read ShadeGuard Netting

Shade cloth is sold by shading percentage, and choosing the right one makes a real difference to how your plants perform. Here is how to think about it for a full greenhouse roof, pergola or larger patio area.

What the percentage actually means

The percentage on a shade cloth is roughly how much direct sunlight it blocks. A 30% cloth still lets most light through with only mild protection from the harshest sun. A 90% cloth blocks the great majority of direct light, useful for shade-loving plants or brutally hot conditions, but too heavy for most fruiting vegetables.

This product: 90% shading

At 90%, this cloth is suited to a full greenhouse roof, pergola or larger patio area. It sits at the heavier end of the range, best suited to shade-loving plants, very hot or exposed spots, or simply making an outdoor space usable at midday.

Matching shade rate to crop

As a rough guide: leafy salad crops and seedlings often prefer lighter shading (30-40%) so they keep strong light levels. Tomatoes, cucumbers and general greenhouse crops commonly do well under 40-55% through the hottest weeks. Shade-tolerant ornamentals, ferns and anything struggling in a very hot, exposed spot often benefit from 70-90%.

Fitting shade cloth well

Drape or tension the cloth clear of the leaves rather than resting directly on the plants, using a frame, hoops or the structure itself. Leave enough slack that air can still circulate underneath, since shade cloth manages light and heat, not airflow, and good ventilation still matters for healthy growth.

When to take it down

Most growers fit shade cloth for the hottest stretch of summer and remove it once temperatures ease, since permanent shading through spring and autumn can leave plants short of light when they need it most. Taking it down between uses and storing it dry also extends how many seasons you get from the same panel.
