GroundMaster Windbreak Netting

A 1m x 10m roll of dense 110gsm mesh, noticeably heavier than a standard screening roll, aimed at exposed plots and allotments that take the full force of prevailing wind.

The denser weave knocks down more wind speed than a lighter screen while still being permeable, which keeps the structure itself under less strain than a solid barrier would face.

Doubles as a strong privacy screen along an allotment or garden boundary, with the density giving noticeably better coverage than lighter mesh.

Built to stand up to repeated seasons in an exposed spot rather than needing yearly replacement.

A full 10m run covers a long boundary or windward side of a plot in one piece, with fewer joins than shorter rolls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from lighter screening netting?

At 110gsm it is a noticeably denser weave than a standard 90gsm screening roll, giving stronger wind reduction and better privacy, at the cost of being a little heavier to handle.

Is this suitable for a very exposed allotment?

Yes, this heavier weight is specifically aimed at exposed plots that take strong prevailing wind, where a lighter mesh may not give enough protection.

Will it damage my plants by blocking too much wind?

No, because it is a permeable mesh rather than a solid barrier, it reduces wind speed and turbulence without creating the harsh, swirling gusts a completely solid fence can cause on its sheltered side.

How do I fix a roll this size along a boundary?

Fix to fence posts or a wire/wood frame with cable ties, wire or a staple gun at regular intervals, keeping tension even along the run so it does not sag or flap.

Can it be used as a stand-alone screen without an existing fence?

It needs some kind of support structure, whether that is post-and-wire, an existing fence, or purpose-built posts; it is a screening material rather than a self-supporting fence.

Will the green colour fade in an exposed, sunny spot?

Outdoor mesh will fade gradually over years of full sun exposure; the denser 110gsm weave is built for durability in exposed conditions but is not immune to gradual UV fading over time.

Is it good for privacy as well as wind protection?

Yes, the denser weave gives noticeably better visual screening than lighter mesh, useful where privacy matters as much as wind reduction.

Windbreak Netting: How It Actually Works

3 min read ShadeGuard Netting

It seems counter-intuitive, but a solid fence is often a worse windbreak than a permeable mesh screen, and it helps to understand why before you buy one.

Why solid barriers struggle

Wind hitting a completely solid fence or wall has nowhere to go but up and over, which creates strong turbulence and a swirling, gusty pocket on the leeward side, often worse than the open wind you started with. Solid barriers also take the full force of the wind directly, which is why garden walls and solid fence panels are prone to being blown over in storms.

Why density matters on exposed plots

A denser weave, like the 110gsm mesh here compared to a standard 90gsm screen, slows more of the wind passing through while still remaining permeable enough to avoid the turbulence problem of a solid barrier. On an exposed allotment or coastal garden where prevailing wind is a real, ongoing problem, that extra density is often the difference between a windbreak that actually works and one that gets overwhelmed.

Fitting it well

Run dense windbreak mesh along the windward boundary of the plot you want to shelter, fixed taut to posts, an existing fence, or a wire frame. Slack netting flaps, wears out its fixings faster, and is less effective, so check tension periodically through the year, especially after any storms.

A privacy bonus

The same density that slows wind also blocks more of the view through the mesh, so a heavier windbreak like this tends to double as a stronger privacy screen than lighter garden netting, useful on an allotment boundary or overlooked garden edge.
